Did you know that here in Australia we generate an appalling 50 million tonnes of waste every single year? According to the recently released statistics, as the population of Australia has grown to more than 24 million, naturally so have the levels of waste that we produce. Based on these statistics, if you do the math you can work out that this means that on average each and every one of us is contributing approximately 2 tonnes of waste per year! This staggering and quite frankly appalling figure is scary to imagine, particularly when we know that all of this waste we are generating is going directly into our landfills, which can reach our waterways and affect our lives in many ways.
So in the face of such a massive problem, what can you do to help prevent this growing waste problem that faces Australia, and indeed the World as a whole, from getting worse and worse?
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Join a local group in your neighbourhood
Get the community involved by talking with your neighbours and establishing a waste management group in your neighbourhood. By all working together to bring down the waste production problem facing our country you will achieve more than what you can do on your own.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
We've heard it before but we need to hear it again: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Proper and efficient recycling is essential in bringing down the amount of waste we are disposing of. These days a large amount of your waste can be recycled including paper, cardboard, class, tin cans, and even some plastics. Also work hard to reduce the amount you use or that you throw away and instead of opting for convenient single use items, instead choose the more reusable option. If something breaks don't instantly reach for the bin, see if you can mend it yourself or else have it repaired.
Spread the word
Bring about awareness of the extent of the problem by talking about these statistics, the ongoing problems we face and the consequences of our lack of action. Use social media to share your thoughts on what you have discovered and inspire others to take steps towards change.
Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try there will always be some waste that needs to be removed.
